Midsummer, the longest day and the shortest night, is the greatest celebration in Latvia. All-night bonfires, songs and beer help waiting for the crucial sunrise. After it, all goes back towards the long, dark winter sadness.
It struck me that the actual waiting starts already during Christmas, the shortest days of the year. So I put a picture of a yesteryear's Midsummer dawn on the wall, and took a photo of the photo every morning before sunrise, starting at winter solstice.
The resulting 185 photographs, arranged in an animation, recreate the emotion of the original morning.
